Lift Off!

This past weekend, not only did we celebrate 58 years since the creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), it also marked a live celebration on the International Space Station (ISS).

NASA, a civilian agency was established in 1959 as a result of US Congress legislation, was created in response to the Soviet Union’s October 4, 1957 launch of its first satellite, Sputnik I. Considered at the time a competition, Sputnik’s launch lifted off the “space race.”

Since then, NASA has been responsible for coordinating America’s activities in space. NASA has sponsored space expeditions, both human and mechanical, that have yielded vital information about the solar system and universe. It has also launched numerous earth-orbiting satellites that have been instrumental in everything from weather forecasting to navigation to global communications.

Fitting that three new crew members would arrive to the International Space Station, and while millions watched live, the Soyuz MS-05 docked at the ISS this past Saturday night. The hatch opened and the current three crew members welcomed the new crew members, bringing the mix of Americans and Russians to 6 crew on board.
