Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day

Rumor has it that today marks the anniversary of Rome being founded in 753 BC. According to legend, it was the birth of the twins Romulus and Remus that kicked off a series of events that resulted in a King ousting a brother, whose daughter, impregnated by the war God Mars, had given birth to rival claimants to the throne, who were sent to be drowned in the Tiber River, but survived and washed ashore, to be suckled by a she-wolf and carried off to what’s now Rome, thus establishing the settlement of Rome.

Well, it may have happened that way. Or it may have been the Greeks even earlier. It all depends on what legends or historians’ theories you subscribe to. But, we know this…Rome wasn’t built in a Day. That is fact.

But, seriously, what does that phrase mean? It was originally a French expression from the late 1100’s, which in modern times is spoken “Rome ne s'est pas faite en un jour.” It was a plea for someone to be patient as important work takes time.
